The anchoring system that came with Brigit was pretty solid and would have done quite fine for PNW cruising. It consisted of a 33lb Bruce anchor with ~50ft of 3/8 BBB chain and another ~200ft of 5/8 three strand rode. All of this run through a beautiful manual windlass. Solid functionality, no power required (other than my Wheaties), super salty looking, and unfortunately not a good solution for my single-handing.
I thought extensively through my goals and dreams and decided to renew the whole system. I also decided that it was one of my top priorities for anchoring to be as efficient as possible. I do not want to hesitate to do it, to do it again if I don’t feel completely good with the job, and to pull and go anchor somewhere else if I feel the urge or pressure to do so. Good for safety and sanity (not just mine!). So I consciously went over the top on this system.
Now I have a Manson Supreme 45lb for primary (the Bruce to secondary duty), with 240ft of 5/16 HT and another ~50ft of 5/8 brait, all run through a Lofrans Tigres, with a remote in the cockpit. Decadent overkill and I am completely comfortable with this.
And I think my manual windlass found a good home here: http://normanobstacle.org
